Archie Marries Veronice Part 3: It’s Twins

Veronica is pregnant. The happily married couple are are ecstatic and spread the news to their equaly ecstatic friends and Veronica asks Betty to be Godmother. Things get more chaotic when the twins arrive then we see some moments of them raising the children.

I didn’t care much for this issue. It jumps around through Veronica’s pregnancy and the birth of their twins. At least I was partially right. They had a girl and a boy. I didn’t find this as entertaining as the previous. In retrospect, I would have been happy ending at the end of the wedding. I got really bored halfway through finding it difficult to keep reading. I really didn’t care anymore about how their life would progress. The high point was the wedding. Everything that has followed has just been ‘bleh.’ The book did restore my interest again at the end when Archie returns to Memory Lane to walk down the other fork in the road. Of course, it leads to an alternate future and our “Archie Marries Betty” story that follows in the next three issues. I liked that part, it tied in to how this plot line started.  I am curious how the rest will go and the how entire story arc will resolve. It’s been an odd ride, thus far.

Archie Marries Veronica Part 2: The Wedding

The wedding day is finally here. Archie and Veronica finally get married then it jumps a year later. Archie is working hard for Mr. Lodge and Veronica has exciting news… She’s pregnant!

This issue moved as quickly as the previous, going through the entire wedding chaos. I think I’ve warmed up to it, though, or at least gotten used to the style of it. I enjoyed it more; I actually felt a few pangs of sadness, there was this finality to it like I was reading one of the last issues of this series. I still feel a little of that as I sit here writing this and I still feel sorry for Betty. I didn’t expect the story to jump a year ahead with him working and Veronica pregnant. That caught me a little off-guard, but I suppose if we’re going to progress down this interesting “what if Archie married Veronica” tale, we might as well get the full picture.

I still find it hard to believe I’m reading a wedding story. The concept still remains one of those things I never would have expected to ever see in my lifetime. To be honest, I am still amazed the Archie comics are still continuing. However, from my reactions to this book, I wonder if I will feel for Veronica how I feel for Betty when I read the other story. I suppose I shall learn soon enough. As for the baby? I am going to guess it’s a girl.

Archie Marries Veronica Part 1: The Proposal

Archie and the gang are about to graduate high school. After their last gig and dealing with the stress of his parents wanting him to go over college brochures, Archie takes a trip up memory lane only to return home to his future, graduating college and proposing to Veronica Lodge.

Since I was a kid reading Archie comics, he was always torn between Betty and Veronica and the ocasional other girl that would pop up sometimes. I always rooted for Betty, though I cannot really say I liked either of them. I really liked Moose & Midge and Jughead. I couldn’t really stand the other characters and I was never really much one for Archie. My father had subscribed to it and it was something to read.

When first hearing about this plot line, I had expected it to be somehow canonical, but when I got to the part where he walked up memory lane and we’re suddenly watching his future, I knew this story really wasn’t going to matter at all. Also when learning this story spans three issues, then they do the same thing with Betty for another three issues, following with an an epilogue, it just cemented that fact. And as far as I know, things continue on as normal for the gang. It sort of kills my excitement and wonder, especially it having been advertised as such a big deal. My curiosity still needed to be satisfied, though.

Things moved fairly quickly in this book, though, this is Archie and stories tend to move quickly, especially in gag comics like this. It still felt like an Archie comic, but I found myself yearning for a bit more substance. It seemed just a little too jumpy and too quick. There still seemed to be a bit of drama, though. I found myself feeling sorry for Betty through all this, hanging out with Jughead and wandering New York and having happened to stumble upon Archie proposing to Veronica at the jewelry store. Then you have Veronica calling her later to ask her to be her Maid of Honor. That poor, poor girl.

I’m interested in seeing how the rest of the story unfolds with the next issue being their wedding. I’m also curious to see the flip side of this coin with him marrying Betty. I still feel a little bit of disappointment, but maybe there are still some surprises in store for me. I shall press on and see how things go.

Battle of the Bands Part 1

Veronica’s father is throwing a Hollywood party and Veronica is pumped about all the celebrities she could meet, but daddykins party planner can’t do the job. Who will he turn to? Veronica, of course.  And the band? Josie and the Pussycats. But her friends threaten to ruin the party. Veronica’s only hope is to distract them with a videogame.

When I read the line of Veronica wanting a comic book after her, you could have probably sensed my eyes rolling miles away. I would have never pegged Veronica as one who reads comic books. However, I’ve been surprised by many things throughout life, as no doubt I have surprised others. In all likelihood, it’s probably just her vanity at work searching to further her *ahem* popularity.

I haven’t seriously touched an Archie comic since I was very young. I picked up a Jughead digest a couple years back that involved Jughead dating a girl and getting into anime. It was so unusual to see the same old Archie cast looking and talking the same, but with modern ideas. I have yet to see any of their “new look” stuff. I’m a little frightened of change. I’m not sure my mind could handle Archie looking different.

I was so young when I started reading Archie. I remember thinking that Veronica and Ronnie were too different people. For some reason, it didn’t occur to me that it was a nickname.

It’s still funny how they change names to avoid stepping on toes. Desperate Homebodies, Beverly Hillbillies 90210, even Rock Band/Guitar Hero get their own parody – Legendary Rock Heroes. And of course, the two bands have to duke it out.

Wait, what? Veronica has videogames and two consoles? This must be her way to reel in more people. I can’t image her playing anything. It absolutely blows my mind. Though, in retrospect, it’s not surprising her staff battled it out. I honestly don’t know how any one can stand that girl.

It seems odd that to prove which band is better, they’re resorting to a videogame. What does that prove? It’s not as if they’re playing real instruments and displaying real musical talent. Dumb. Especially when the crowd talks about how Josie and the Pussycats are on the way out and can’t even get a job. What does a videogame have to do with that? Pfft. Whatever.

But.., I have to know, so I’ll be reading the next one.

Sonic Universe – Issues #1-2

I have been collecting comics for donkey’s years and probably will until my dying day. And as the years pass, my tastes change. Things I once adored I’ll never touch, and things I’d never read, I covet.

So here’s Sonic Universe. I had always been a sort of, mild, Sonic fan. I had watched a few episodes of the first cartoon series that hit television. I had played a few of the games on the Genesis and Game Gear, but they never held my interest enough for me to finish. I never once considered myself a fan until I had played Sonic Unleashed on PS3.

I loved that game. I loved the storytelling and all the elements of the game. It really made me feel young, sorta like the “Mega Man 9 Effect.” I devoured that game. Sure, I haven’t finished it yet, because I actually care about 100% completion.

And so a visit to my LCS I ventured where they keep their kiddie comics. The first 2 issues of Sonic Universe caught my eye. It looked neat, they were inexpensive, and it was Sonic. I really wanted more of that child nostalgia feeling.

The first issue did a fairly good job. If it were more of 1st issue and not a 1st issue of a side story of two ongoing series, it would have been easier to swallow. Still, the recaps did give me an idea of what had been going on.

The second issue pretty much killed everything. It did continue the events of Shadow, but with so many flashbacks creating a pacing problem, I felt cheated.

Flashbacks are a useful tool in story-telling, but they should be used carefully, or the significance and depth become lost. There are many alternative ways to give someone back information, an the way they were used in this issue was ridiculous and unnecessary. We didn’t need to see that at all. We know Sonic and Shadow don’t get on well, even the times they work together, the tension is there. And if the references to the Ark are important to future issues, fine. It still should have been done differently.

I’m very worked up about this. I’m halfway through the series wondering if I should bother spending the few dollars to finish it off. It’s hard to even believe how downhill it went.

And here’s the other issue. If I was reading STH and SX, would my opinions differ? I have no way of knowing and the quality having dropped makes me leery of even going back to collect TPBs and catch up. I certainly would have a better grasp on events and characters, but storytelling and format of the second issue would still bother me.

sigh I have plenty of time to think about this before #3 ships. We’ll just have to see.
